how to report a breeder?

Question:
hello out there..I hope I am posting this in the correct section..I apologise if I am not..you all have been so helpful to me in just the past few weeks of owning our puppy..I truly truly need your help out there on what to do in my situation..a few weeks ago, we purchased a lab puppy from a breeder in aliquippa PA.. when I took her to my vet this past friday for her 1st checkup & shots etc,,the asst's, secretary, my vet & a lab breeder of 15 years that happened to be in the office at the time, all looked at my puppy & are certain that she is NOT pure bred!!..to make matters worse, she may be a very sickly puppy..she is LOADED with hookworms, pyroderma, amongst other things..they then looked at the paper work I recieved from this supposed breeder & were totally & completley confused..NONE of this "akc" paperwork makes any sense..they could not determine the mother or father of my puppy from what this breeder had provided me..on top of that, the shots that my puppy needs, could not be given to her because the health record was unreadable..no date, nothing as to when the shots were last given to her..to hear that she is not pure bred is very dissapointing & shocking, especially when we waited so long to get our puppy because we wanted to find a good breeder..but to know that she was neglected & obviously not taken care of when she was a newborn puppy, breaks my heart!!
when my husband went to pick up our puppy from this "breeder", he said the conditions of the outside & inside of the house were astounding!!.. there were at least 15 dogs on premises outside, scattered in igloos in the backyard, more dogs & puppies inside the home, that was filthy & unkept.. I was shocked to hear this, but was still so excited that we finally had the puppy we always wanted, that I didnt think to much into what he had said.. it wasnt until this vet visit, that I realized, if our puppy wasnt taken care of properly, & then all the other dogs & puppies that are still there arent being taken care of either!..& I cant seem to shake how upsetting it is that we paid this "breeder" $400 for what we thought was a pure bred lab, & here there is an extreme chance that she isnt at all!! the paperwork that she supplied us on bailey's father, made no sense to my vet, his asst's, or the truelab breeder that was there in the office that day!..she lists 3 possible sires,no mother at all..noone could make sense of it!..
I am not sure what to from here?..my vet office tried contacting this "breeder" along with myself several times, but conveniently I am not recieving any return call..a few people told me to contact the humane society & kenell club..I would never think about giving up our puppy..I love her dearly & will do whatever I have to do to help her to be as healthy as possible, but I cannot bear to think of this "breeder" taking advantage of someone else, or continue to run a puppy mill that is only to her own advantage & selfishness...any advice that anyone can offer me at this point is very much appreciated!!..

Answer:
on top of that, the shots that my puppy needs, could not be given to her because the health record was unreadable..no date, nothing as to when the shots were last given to her
Not understanding this part, as being in a rescue, we never take the word of anyone that says puppy shots have been given (if someone surrenders a pup that as) unless they can prove it. If they cannot, the pups get all their puppies shots no matter what. Since the paper was not readable, then I would think that the vet would give them from start, just in case. Especially since this all seems fishy to start with.
I'm really sorry you are going through this, the saddest part is all the dogs and pups she still has. The best bet is to report her to your local SPCA, also check about animal cruelty in your area, and also contact AKC about the conditions and all else. Heck if all else fails report her to the IRS. Chances are she does not report her income from her dogs.
Just remember that if you do get in contact with her and complain about the $$ spent, she will probably want the puppy back. Are you willing to put that puppy back in her hands under those conditions? I could not do it, I would take the loss before I gave her that puppy back.
Why does the vet think it is not a pure bred Lab? Do you have pictures of your puppy? How old is this pup? It is not uncommon at one point to think it does not look or act like a pure bred, so just curious.
As I say I'm really sorry you are going through this, but just think of that puppy and how it no longer will live under those conditions:)

Answer:
why did you even get a puppy from these people? the reason there are so many backyard unreputable breeders is people keep them in business by buying puppies from them? The same thing with pet stores..its up to buyer to see the obvious red flags amd stay away...ask if they have OFA on the dogs the response is generally ''they ain't got no hip displacement'' huge red flag...I hope your puppy is going to be okay and if it is not purebred and is reg with AKC you can have them investigate and they will revoke the papers if thats the case but those type people often reg with CKC or some other crock registry that is basicly just a PO box...

Answer:
I would call the AKC, they have to be able to help, also that county's Animal Control Officer, in Westchester, NY it's a branch of the local PD. Is any vets' name listed on your paperwork? If they claim to have been given shots perhaps you can call that office (if listed on papers). Taking a long shot here but do they have a web-site (this breeder), if so then perhaps the Better Business Bureau for false advertising.
If all else fails, have a friend call this breeder (or call from their number)...they make have caller ID & see your name & won't pick up????
Most of all don't beat yourself up!!! Hope you get this breeder, but most of all take care of the pup & focus on him. Prayers & good thoughts are with you.

Answer:
thank you so much for the advice.. the shots werent given the first time I took her in because he said he wasnt sure if the "breeder" just gave the pup her shots at 9weeks? so he said to try & get in contact with the breeder to ask WHEN the last shots were given & then he could go from there??.. I did just take her in this morning & they have her a distemp. & now in 3 weeks he said to come back in & ger another distemp & a rabies..
I feel do horrible for those other puppies too!!..that's why I want something to be done..I would NEVER give my puppy back, pure bred or not..she is such a good puppy & so loveable, it would just break my heart to ever give her up, especially to this woman!!!.. my husband said there were so many other dogs though & I have been checking her website & she is breeding puppies left & right!!..it is sickening to me!!..I did contact the humane society..havent heard back yet..I guess we will see what happens from here..I am just hoping to get my puppy in good health! that is my goal as of right now!..
thanks again for everything!!..I will try to attach a pic of bailey so you can see her..

well, my husband said if I would have been with him at the time, we probably would not have gotten a dog from her..he knows how I am..but he was by himself & said he was worried that I would be heartbroken if he came home without her.. SUPPOSEDLY she said she was sending akc papers etc to us, but surprise surprise, we havent recieved anything yet!..

Answer:
that is so sweet of you!..thank you for your prayers!..kodie is beautiful by the way!..
she supposedly gave bailey her shots..my husband saw her go into the freezer & take a sticker off the shots & put it on bailey's paperwork..but never listed a date or anything as to when she gave them to her..this breeder does have a website actually..& that's why I ended up going throughher because her website is SOOOO decieving!..she seems like she has her stuff together & the puppies are well taken care of, but when you get there, it's a whole other story!!!!...I am trying my best to take care of bailey..giving her medicine for her hookworms..I have to give her her heartworm med. this friday & I am making sure she is eating & drinking!..I am praying for her as well!...thanks again!!!!!..

SUPPOSEDLY she said she was sending akc papers etc to us, but surprise surprise, we havent recieved anything yet!.. You are absolutely right about concentrating on your puppy. With the proper meds & some TLC he'll be OK. Don't fret about the $400. Breeders in other areas of Pa & upstate NY get 1250-1500 & this is with a limited registration(meaning you can't breed them).
You mentioned a website....does she list this recent litter and who the mother and/or father is. Most breeders (reputable) will do that.
Well, as said earlier, concentrate on your pup for now...and don't look back as go through the what if's.....but I'm with you...I'd go after this breeder.

I'm sorry you are going through all this! I know what it's like to get a dog and it not be what you expected. People think that Chase is not pure bred, because she's little for a labbie, but she certainly looks like one and she's within breed standards for height, etc, but she's on the smaller side of the breed standard.
When we got her she had fleas and coccidia and she's an absolute spaz. So, I'm 99.9% sure she's a product of a mom that has just been bred too much! Our BYB gave shots, but did it at the petsmart, because to see a vet it was too expensive ( ). He's sending us the paperwork for Chase...Yah right (it's only been 3 years)! He also didn't let us go to him, he came to us and when I asked questions about the mom, he told me that it didn't matter how many litters she's had, etc..... :hammer:
It wasn't until I joined this board that I was educated on BYBs,etc. It stinks, from what I read about what your DH saw when he went to get the puppy, I would have walked away. Also, normally from what I've seen, pure bred pups are way more costly than $400.
But you've got the puppy and you will give it the care it needs and that is all that matters! Good luck with your endeavour in reporting this lady - I hope they are able to take her down. I'm sorry you were put in this situation. Enjoy your pup and please take pictures - they grow up WAY to fast!! :thumb4:

Answer:
I moved the post here because I think it will get more visability and it really isn't a health question at all.
Good luck with everything. The most important thing people need to learn and the hardest thing to do is walk away when you figure out it's not right.

Answer:
You can contact the attorney generals office in the county where breeder resides and file a complaint under "The Puppy Lemon Law".
But the problem with that is you need a certificate from your vet that the pup is not healthy dated at least 5 days after taking possession of the pup. If its been more than 5 days - and the fact that records may have been falcified to show this as a pure bred when in fact it may not be, you may still have a leg to stand on.
The idea is to either return the pup for a refund or get the breeder to pay medical bills up to the cost of the pup. It is entirely up to you as the owner - breeder can not demand the pup back. I too wouldn't give her back if I were you. She needs you to take good care of her and be sure she gets healthy.
I agree with reporting her to the AKC and see if they will do an on premises inspection. I would also call animal control and find out how many dogs they are allowed to have for the size of their property. If you report her to AC they will most likely do an inspection. I went thru this in another county and they did.
This is just awful that you are going thru all of this. I knew there were issues but had no idea there were this many.
Isn't there a new test out now (blood) to determine the breeding in mixed breed dogs? I don't see why it wouldn't work on your pup to prove is she is pure or not. I think it only runs around $85 but could be wrong. i know there was a thread about it on this board a little while back.
If you need any help please let me know.

I'm so sorry about Bailey, but I'm so glad she's found her way to your home. I'd love to see pics!
