Spay - UTI?

Question:
 Is it true that having gone through the first heat will cure the dog from chronic UTI? Or will spaying before the heat period do the trick too?

Answer:
Only if the dog has an inverted vulva. If the chronic UTI is due to something else, it might not matter.

Answer:
As Jen says - with a inverted/recessed vulva its important to have a first heat cycle in the hopes the vulva will correct itself. I have had 3 cases that did.
Does your pup have cronic UTIs? Are you sure there is no RV? Not all vets have seen this and capable of diagnosing. I know of vets that have spayed pups with RVs because they didn't know and it should not have been done.
If no RV but cronic UTIs I would be doing a culture and sensitivity on urine to determine exact bacteria (may even need a cystosentisis to get purest urine sample) for proper meds. Be sure the dog is clear of UTIs for a few months or longer prior to spay. At least that is what I would do.
What does your vet say?

Answer:
We did a urinanalysis 2 months ago and the only problem was the urine concentration. It was more water base. No crystal, etc etc. There is half a drop of yellow discharge once in a while when I check. How do I find out if she has a inverted/recessed vulva? How does it look like?
