My Yorkie coughing a lot, please help! what can it be?

Question:
My Yorkie 5 month and 1 week, She's been cughing since I bought her at 3 month, I went to vet so many times and spent so much money(more than $1000) and no help. Onece she was really bad, I thought she is going to die, she was coughing a lot, non stop, was not eating, no drinking for few days, vet gave an injection of fluids under skin, antibiotic shot and few times I was brining her to that animal hospital for nebulazer treatment, also Vet game me antibiotic by mouth Cefa-Drops 1ml every 12 hrs,, and cough syrup- Hydrocodone 2 times daily, after that she fills little better, it happened when she was 3,5 month old, but she still coughing sometimes less, sometimes more, and right now she still caughing, especially at late evening, at night, and early in the morning. I fill so bad for my dog, I love her so much, and want to help but don't know how? Right now I'm giving her antibiotic: Amoxicillin 2 times daily 0.5ml, vet gave me, also Hydrocodone syrup 5mg per 5 ml, 1/2 drop fool, 2 times daily, and also I bought yesterday Robitussin DM I read on internet that Robitussin - DM cough suppressant (child dosage) will reduce coughing. (1/4 teaspoonful per 5 pounds, three times daily). I'm giving her 1ml, 3 times daily, and also I bought nebulezer machine and giving her nebulizer with Albuterol 0.083% few times daily about 3 min. I read on internet that it's maybe Kennel cough, but it should be treated with antibiotic, my dog has been taking all different kind of antibiotic and other treatment but it doesn't go away, maybe it is Collapsing Trachea? I don't know what to do, please give me any advise. Thanks

Answer:
Wow sorry you're going through this. Have you seen another vet just for a second opinion and such. I would and wow thats a lot of meds for a puppy.
My puppy still coughs till this day not as much as b4 but I have noticed its a more perfound cough.. scares me at times, I believe it jsut might be his trachea. Do you have the AC on and if you do make sure the air isnt hitting your puppy directly, this can make the cough worse.
Go to another vet just to check ...
gl. keep us posted!

Answer:
Have you contacted the breeder to see if anyone else in the litter was also sick and to tell her how sick your baby has been? Maximus caught kennel cough from the vets about 2 weeks after I got him...1 vet said collapsed trachea and the pther said kennel cough...turns out he got a shot (penicilin)..a cough suppresant and a antibiotic (think amoxicillan)...10 days later he was all better and no more cough...maybe see a new vet and get a second opinion...Maximus' hacking got better at about 5-6 days into the medicine. If you need the names of the anitbiotics the vet gave me..pm me and I will sned the info if you want to pass it by the vet!!

Answer:
Thanks everyone for your answer. I'm afraid it's collapsed trachea :( I went to 3 vets, one said it's Kennel cough( he was the first vet who I went to when I just bought my puppy and I though that cough will go away soon), another two don't say anything, I'm tired to go to vet and just spend money for nothing. They just giving me another dose of antibiotic( every time different because of antibiotic resistance I'm already know that too) I'm reading a lot of information on the internet and books ,sometimes I feel like I know more than vet, but still can not help my dog. If it's collapsed trachea, I believe she needs surgery, and it depends what part of the trachea affected, If the only abnormal part is that segment between the throat and the point where the trachea enters the chest (the thoracic inlet), surgery may be curative. However, if the segment of the trachea that is within the chest cavity is abnormal, surgery is not likely to be helpful because that part is not accessible to the surgeon. Endoscopy is the way to visualize the trachea and I know it's very expensive procedure. But right now she still on antibiotic and all other medication and nebulezer, I'll see how she will feel by the time when antibiotic will finished.
LUZANGELA428, I bought my puppy not from the breeder :( and have no idea about other puppy in the litter. That's why I have nobody to help me :-( I bought http://www.puppypetite.com/yorkies.html that's in New York, they have only 2 weeks refund policy, but I have problem with the dog since the time I bought her, I thought the cough will go away, and I'm in love with my dog, I don't know what to do

I got my puppy Sam when he was 10 wks old and he had a runny nose, but no coughing. It was during my graduation so I didn't have time to go to a vet. 2 days later when I was moving home he started coughing and wasn't eating or drinking so I immediately brought him to the emergency vet b/c it was a Sunday. They diagnosed him with kennel cough and possible pneumonia b/c his chest didn't sound too good. They kept him over night and then he was transferred to my vet and spent 2 more nights there on IV and antibiotics. He was showing improvement so they let me take him home, but 3 days later he got worse so I brought him to the breeder's vet all the way in Queens, NY (I live in South Jersey but it was free!) and they kept him for 4 days on IV and nebulizer treatment. They sent him home with cholorphenocal (not sure how to spell it) which my vet at home said isn't really used anymore and if it is they use it on kittens. By this point he wasn't as congested and his nose was cleared up. Anyway once he was finished that antibiotic he was still coughing so I took him back to my vet and she put him on Clavamox (amoxicillin) and Antirobe Aquadrops for 2 wks and he was still coughing after that. Finally she put him on the Cefa-drops w/ the Antirobe Aquadrops for another 2 wks plus Robitussin without the DM (she said to get the one that says it has Guafenisin in it b/c it's an expectorant). So after the Cefa-drops he's still coughing and I just brought him to the vet this past Thursday and she said that b/c he's been on so much medicine that we'll take him off for a while and see what happens, but to still keep him on the Robitussin. I've been giving him that at night and he gets up at 3:33 on the dot every night coughing. Like you said, Sam coughs mostly at night and in the morning and then occasionally during the day. It is definitely not when he is active. It's like when he's playing he's preoccupied so he won't cough, but the minute he lays down it bothers him. My vet said that his last chest x-ray showed some fluid, but it could just be scarring. I don't think Sam has collapsed trachea b/c he doesn't cough when he's active and he was diagnosed with pneumonia. I was finally able to get him his 2nd round of shots at 4 months old b/c they couldn't do it when he was sick. I know exactly how you're feeling right now. I still don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it is definitely a huge improvement from when I first got him. He is so playful and eats like a hog. You would never know he was sick. I'm supposed to go back to the vet in 3 wks for more shots and a check-up but once the medication is out of his system and if he starts coughing more I have to bring him back. I was actually nervous today b/c he was coughing more than usual and they say sometimes all the fluid isn't cleared with pneumonia and the infection can come back. I'm just trying to take it day by day and pray because he is my little baby. I hope your puppy will get better soon as well. I was thinking of going to a different vet for a second opinion, but he has been to 3 already and they all said the same thing. Hopefully this will just take time for it to go away. They do say kennel cough is a virus and will go away on its' own.

Answer:
Hope both of your babies get well soon. Please keep us posted!

Answer:
Your dog may be getting immune to all the meds being given. Normally an antibiotic is only given for 10 days. I would for sure take her to a different vet, one that knows all about toy breeds. Could be the trachea. If she has an oval one, and gets excited, she will cough.

Answer:
Kendraleigh, I realize we have the same problem. :( You right, the good thing is they don't cough when they get excited and active otherwise that's sign of Collapsed Trachea. I was playing with her today outside, she was running and jumping and she was not coughing, but also the sign of Collapsed trachea -when they cough after drinking water, and my dog coughs after she drinks water, how about Sam?
She still taking all her medication, antibiotics, nebulizer, cough syrup., now it's evening time and she starts coughing again. :( It seems as dry and harsh and pronounced, and also seems sometimes like she's choking or vomits, but nothing comes out. I feel so sorry for her, I love her sooo much! I'm praying every day for her to get better. Anyway we will keep in touch, and thanks everybody for your support!

Answer:
Hi Steve! I know this isn't a happy way to have something in common with someone, but I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only person experiencing this. I think we'll be able to help each other out w/ some tips. Sam doesn't cough when he's active or when he drinks. It's only when he lays down. In the beginning when he had the pneumonia, he did cough when he drank, but that only lasted for 2 wks and now he doesn't do that anymore. I just read an ad on this site for Kennel-Koff and it sounds promising. I posted a thread to see if anyone had any experience with it. At this point I'll try whatever will help my little man. I was told by my vet to not give Robitussin DM or CF, just the one that says Guafenisin on it b/c you want them to cough in case they need to relieve the mucus. It works for Sam at night but it only lasts the 6 hrs. I'm going to call my vet tomorrow to see if she has heard of Kennel-Koff. Please keep me posted!

Answer:
Thanks Kendraleigh, tomorrow I'm going to buy Robitussin Guafenisin. I'm also glad that at least I'm not alone. I was looking at your site picture of your Sam, He is so beautiful, he has a very pretty eyes, I feel so sorry that he suffers a lot like my girl :( they don't deserve it! They came to this world to be happy like all other dogs. More than anything I want them to get better!

Answer:
Hi Steve~ Well I feel like I spoke too soon b/c Sam was up a lot last night coughing. I called my vet today b/c that's what she told me to do and she won't be in until tomorrow afternoon. I'm very frustrated at this point b/c now the Robitussin isn't even working so I wouldn't waste your money. I was looking in WAL-MART last nite at different kinds of robitussin and I found one that I'm going to ask my vet about. It's the infant drops and it controls the cough (which mine doesn't do) and has guafenisin in it as well. It doesn't have DM or CF after the title so maybe this will help. The one I have now doesn't control the cough it just breaks up any congestion. I was thinking about calling around to other vets in my area to get a 4th opinion! The weird thing is that he is fine otherwise. What makes me feel a little bit better is that I know he started out with pneumonia so the cough is happening for a certain reason. I really don't think it's collapsed trachea for that reason. All 3 vets said it was an upper respiratory infection/kennel cough that turned into pneumonia. So we'll see what happens in the next few days. I really am hesitating this time to put him on more medicine b/c nothing seems to work. I think I'm also going to ask my vet about the penicillin shot that luzangela was talking about. Hope all is well with you.

Answer:
Kendraleigh, I ordered this medication by internet http://www.ambertech.com/kennelk/index.php I don't know if this going to work, but they promise it works. I''ll try and let you know, but it's going to take few days by the time they delivered and it starts to work (if it will). I also tried everything, nothing seems working, she still coughing a lot! Poor baby, when she sees medication or nebulizer machine she already starts shaking before I even giving it to her :( All she sees in her life, just medication, injections, treatment, nebulizer :(
