best food for yorkies

Question:
 I am purchasing my first yorky soon and i don't know what kind of food to give to my baby.What would be the best dog food for yorkies? Do i switch foods when it gets over one year?

 i home cook for Layla. When i got her she was on purina... i switched to Iams... then to Blue Buffalo and that made her very sick... at whcih point i did my homeework and realized what is best for her is homecooking. I cook about once every month or two and freeze the food (if i could i'd make it fresh every day but i'm at university student.. not going to happen :p) if you want to read a GREAT book on getting started Dr. Pitcairn wrote a book all on homecooking you can find at Barnes and Noble or somewher like that
That said if you don't think homecooking is for you (and it's not for everone) Orijen, in my opinion, is THE BEST FOOD.... there are no grains in it as dogs dont' really need them.. they are just fillers.... it is 70 % meat and 30% fruits and veggies. you can get it at most healthy pet stores, usually small and locally owned. but make the transition slowly. Also good foods are Fromm, Wellness, Canidae,

 I use Nutro Lamb & Rice, and they like it, but I'm thinking of switching to Chicken Soup for the dog Lovers Soul. I just can't find it anywhere.

 I've been using the Natural Balance Duck and Potato that seems to be working well. :) You don't want any "by-products" in the ingredients.:thumbdown

 thanks for all the feedback.what do you think about royal canin or blue buffalo? both are iffy.. both had types of food that were involved in the recall so i would steer clear of those... i woudlnt' buy anything you can get at petsmart... and Blue buffalo gave Layla diarrhea for over a month before we realized it was the food....

 I believe Blue Buffalo is considered high quality food by Whole Dog Journal. My dogs are doing great on the Lamb and Rice version. Others here have had good reports on Blue Buffalo too. I realize that Layla had a problem with it, but she's the only one I am aware of.

 I raw feed because my dogs absolutly thrive on it, i tried lots of other feeding programs and nothing has made them so healthy and happy than raw does. There are lots of fantastic books and websites out there about it. I highly recommend it but obviously its not for everybody. Homecooking is another good alternative and I agree that dogs do not need grains and that kibble wise orjien is definatly the best. Don't know much about the other foods mentioned as i'm in the UK where obviously there are different dog foods (you can get orijen online).

Congratulations on your new baby! :) You are smart to shop for a good quality dog food! whatever you decide on, make sure to read the ingredients. There should be NO CORN, NO WHEAT OR SOY AND NO BY-PRODUCTS of any kind. The corn and wheat can cause allergies and they are just used as cheap fillers that have no nutritional value. The by-products are the parts of animals that aren't used for anything else..i.e. beaks and feet plus euthanized sickly or diseased animals collected from vets including road kill. The collars are not removed either so you can get plastic and metal in with the mix:thumbdown

I personally wouldn't feed a dog or cat food from any brand that had a recall on it even if it was something that i didn't use. My babies are too valuable to me to feed brands that might be questionable. Homecooking is great too but i don't have time and i would worry that they wouldn't be getting all the nutrients that they need.

 i want to make sure my puppies get the best food for yorkies with no recalls. This is why im doing so much research before i purchase my first puppy so i can have the food decided beforehand.Thanks for the offer on samples but im probably not going to need it for awhile because im geting my yorky after i get back from vacation towards the middle/end of september. :)

Do you cook one thing or a variety? I would love to cook for Zoey, but Im afraid I dont know what Im doing? Freezing sounds great! If you have a good recipe for something I can freeze please share! PS Love your signature!
