Chicken and rice

Question:
 My 9 year old yorkie Holly, has had problems with severe diarrhoea for the past 2 years now,severe colitis apparently. it comes and goes, but when she has it it's awful. because she was treated terribly before we rehomed her at 5 years, she won't ask to go out, so if I miss the signs (panting or trembling) then she does it in the house aghhhhh.
Well the vet recently put her on Royal Canin sensitivity food, but it is really expensive at £1.00 a tin, so I am cooking my own chicken and rice, this has taken a week for her to adjust to, we had some runny poops, but now she is solid again.
Has anyone else got this problem.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice they can give me? I am also concerned about her not getting the right vitamins. My 5 year old yorkie is also eating this now too, as when i was feeding him different foods,because he is fussy he would leave some and Holly would eat it. I just couldn't keep tabs on her.NOT GOOD
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

STAY WITH IT>. and starting adding some veggies.. grated carrotts.. see how they affect her.. sounds like you should consider always home cooking from now on.. Layla's diarrhea clearned up as soon as i started. Also go look in a pet store for a supplimnet like Missing Link and her diet will be more complete... you can also add broccoli, peas (cooked) you can also add vitamin E and fish oil or cod liver oil to her food if you wanted above and beyond the Missing Link. good luck and i hope it helps. if you want more help with home cooking you can pm me :)

 Just curious as to what kind of chicken are you using? I'm using boneless skinless chicken breast and it gets kind of pricey.

I buy cheap whole small chickens (2 per week), boil until it falls apart, once cools, it's really easy to pick from the bone. I keep the stock to make soup with.
I just use boiled rice.You could cook the rice in the chicken stock for extra flavour.

 If they are not itching or showing any signs of allergy, then the chicken will be fine. I don't give mine chicken because they will get diarrhea from it. I use free range ground beef and ground lamb. I cook those and add to rice, split peas, lentils (that I cook all together) and grated carrots. I also make them steel cut oats and add steamed broccoli. I mix that in thier food for breakfast. I make healthy powder from Dr. Pitcairns book, and then add vitamin A, E and glucosimine chondroitin. If their stools look too light then they will get iron as well.

I just use boiled rice.You could cook the rice in the chicken stock for extra flavour. if you are using white rice.. see if you can slowly switch to brown.. just better for them... as for the veggies and suppliment.. if this homecooking is something you plan on contiuing for a while they will need more than just chicken and rice. so i'd HIGHLY recommend both! jsut start slow.. if the suppliement says 1 tsp.. start with 1/8 of a tsp.. and work your way up.. if you can REALLY grind up carrotts in a food processor and mix it in with the food.. start with a small amount and see how she reacts... carrotts are fibre which will help with the poops quite a bit!! you might also want to try a yogurt... plain... one like BioBest or something... as long as it has Pro Biotic Cultures.. yogurt is great at putting back the natural bacteria that dogs need in their stomach.. and if your little one is losing everything in the diarrhea the yogurt will really help her stomach go back to normal... Layla gets about 1-2 tsp a day..so try starting with 1/2 tsp. i think if you do all of these things you'll see a big improvement... especially the homecooking. if you have more questions.. keep em coming. i'll do my bes t:)

 When I first got Luigi, I started to switch his wet food to dry food. He got the runs for a couple days and I took him to the vet. They gave some antidiarrheal medication, and then suggested I feed him the bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to harden the stool. It worked, and then to transition back to actual dog food, they told me to slowly start adding whatever kibble you are using along with some parts chicken and some parts rice. After a week or so, he should be back on dog food to get the proper nutrients/vitamins. He's all good now and finally used to dry kibble!
Is there any other type of dry dog food she can go on and that you can transition her to from the white rice and chicken?

I'm not really up for trying to gradually get her back onto the dog food, as we have tried this for two years and the colitis still flares up from time to time with the dog food.
I am gonna stick to the home cooking, and see how it goes.

 Shadow. I use boneless chicken breast as well. If you have a BJ's or Costco by you it's a lot cheaper. I think I pay $2.39 a pound for it and that's individually freezer wrapped. It costs me I think around $17.00 for a tray and I freeze each piece (Because as I said they are individually wrapped) and then take them out as I need them. I usually cook it w/ a chicken boiluon cube, and add fresh carrots, and either potatoe or sweet potatoe and then mix in some brown rice. Elaine

Please be careful...it is not complete without a calcium source. And note, a few tablespoons of cottage cheese or yogurt will not come close to the calcium they need.
So its fine for once in a while, such as for her dog's upset tummy, but long term with no calcium source will create a silent problem that will show up later.

try looking for Solid Gold Bone Meal.... it is a great source of calcium... Bone Meal is available in heath food stores but you need to get a souce that is made just for animals. Thanks mistyinca for the reminder!
