Overweight

Question:
I had taken Mojo and Lily to the vet the other day and the vet right off the bat noticed that Mojo had gained weight. Yep, he sure has. Since his neuter, he has gained almost a pound. We are feeding Canidea, he only gets 1/3cup throughout the day. We will do half in the morning and half later, when we eat our dinner. We add not even 1/2tsp of Missing Link to his food in the morning. (none in the evening portion). He only gets Yorkie Yummies treats when I am working with him (training, photos, etc) and on occassion, a little piece of Canidea biscuit or Pupcorn.
We are active, but can be more active....can't we all??!! He loves to go outside, etc.
What else can I do to get his weight back down to where he should be. The vet didn't seem too concerned and seemed to think our feeding habit was okay. So, she really didn't give me too much advice.
Please help.

Answer:
Same thing happened to Lillybelle when she was spayed. She gained almost 1.5lbs within a few months. She had weighed about 4lbs, and was spayed at 1 and half years of age. Her vet said it was perfectly normal that she gained weight after being spayed...she weighs about 5.5lbs now...she's not really bigger in stature, but rounder and heavier....I was feeding her exactly the same food before and after spaying, we walk a mile or so 3-4 times a week, play in back yard daily. Not a thing changed.

Answer:
Does Mojo feel round to you? does he have a waist? can you feel his ribs? Maybe he just filled out to a healthy weight. How old is mojo?

Answer:
So, the vet didn't seem to mind the weight either? Mojo is the same, he looks pretty much the same, just rounder and heavier. He seems to pat more....I just know there has to be something that we can do. I have almost thought about seeing another vet to get some ideas (even though I truly love our vet)...I just remember reading that a little bit of extra weight on a dog is like 25lbs of extra weight on us (or some outrageous amount like that). I just want him to be healthy!!!!

Oh no...Mojo is overweight...he is 4 years old and was okay before his neuter. I can no longer feel his ribs. :thumbdown

Answer:
It seems like he is eating well and not eating "junk food". This may be his ideal weight since he is also exercising. I would not worry unless he puts on more weight.

Answer:
I know...I just worry. AND it just seems wierd that he has been a pretty constant weight until now. He was the same weight (give or take for years) and then after his neuter, he's gained. - I mean, that is the first thing the vet commented on when she walked into the room! We don't get much exercise, but I am working on that starting next week. I just worry w/ all the snakes and ticks...YUCK....but he will be out more exercising and playing. I think since it has been so rainy here and now it is hot and humid, he has gotten too comfy in the AC! And I remember reading that if you can not feel their ribs (I couldn't even tell you where they begin on him) that they are overweight - which I know since the vet commented about it.

Answer:
I noticed that as i have been reading about people who switch to Canidea, they say their pets are gaining weight. If you are one that switched as well after he was neutered then maybe its the food that is making the difference. Did you ask the vet if they usually gain weight after that type of procedure?
I personally would not worry unless the next time i visited the vet he gained another pound. If your feeding the recommended serving of food each day maybe your pet is at the weight he is gonna be at and is fine.

I understand you on the ticks and Puerto Rico is one of the worse places for ticks. I had the same worry, cause I am scared of all kinds of bugs and made my son deal with them when Ryo had them. I wouldn't let him go in grass. I was checking his paws after every walk, well my son was lol. We found at least 5 ticks a day. I treated him with frontline and Bam! no fleas or ticks and now he runs in this flea tick and chigger infested grass and doesn't come home with unwanted new hitchhikers anymore. I know some people around here us other stuff but do ur research as a vet and get something on him that will protect him and enjoy the outdoors with him. Since Ryo is an indoor dog, When i say OUTSIDE, its like telling him he is going to Disneyland for dogs. He gets excercise and we are both happy and healthy
Akc.org:
"Weight - A healthy dog's weight is the result of the balance between diet and exercise. If he is getting enough nutritious food and exercise but still seems over- or underweight, he may have a health problem. Don't let your dog get fat by giving him too many between-meal snacks; obese dogs often develop serious health problems. The best way to tell if your dog is overweight is to feel his rib-cage area. You should be able to feel the ribs below the surface of the skin without much padding."

Whoa...I definitely do not think it would be very healthy if he gained another pound or so! Like I told my vet, size doesn't matter to me, it is his health more than anything!
Yes, we did start Canidea after the neuter, but weight gain is a common occurance after these procedures. The vet even told me this before and she just said to watch what he eats and his activities. I know that I need to be more active and I know that he does too.
Ticks are so yucky! We have never had fleas (knock on wood), but here, all we can do is walk on the grass or my hiking trail through the woods. We have so many wild animals here, the ticks are bad. We are on Frontline Plus and we still find ticks. We switched from K9 Advantix because it just didn't seem to work. So far, Frontline Plus...they still get ticks on them (which I know they will) but I just worry about those yucky little bugs!!!

Thanks for that....see, before, I could feel his ribs, but now, I can't....I mean, even if I push down harder, I can't feel them.....
I think I wikll start our exercise plan tonight and work with him all summer.....if in a while I notice no change, I will go back to the vet....if nothing, I will get another opinion for some ideas.

Answer:
Shelby has lost some weight in the past few months...... to accomplish this we stopped all extra treats. NONE. For rewards she gets extra attention and gets to play fetch.
She was used to getting fed 3 times a day.... and she knows when it is time to eat  ....... so we kept the 3 feedings but cut them back. She gets 1/8 cup (feeding 1), 1/8 cup (feeding 2), and then a few (about 10) kibbles (we call this a "snack" and she knows what "snack time" is .. )
It probably totals 1/3 cup per day.
I can tell that she feels much better..... she has lost 1 pound!! :cheer:

I know a lot of people say its because of the neuter, but its really not. that is just a myth. Plenty of pets are spayed and neutered daily and do not gain excess weight after the procedure.
From what you've wrote it sounds like his food intake and treat intake are ok. Its possibly that his exercise regimen is lacking. I know that now that its hot outside and humid i take morgan out less because i dn't want to be out there with her  its too stinkin gross out there. morgan hasn't gained any weight tho (i can't seem to put any weight on this girl) but i know others who have dogs that gain a little in the summer months because they are too hot to be active. early morning and night time play outside might help because its cooler then, or right after it rains is a good time (if you don't mind him getting wet in the grass)

Try a combination of frontline and Adams shampoo. a friend of mine said Frontline plus and advantix didn't work. She used the shampoo as well on her yorkie and she had no more problems. So she put on the Frontline. Then the 2 weeks later she washed with the Adams brand of flea and tick shampoo.
My son is my "Icky stuff slave" I wouldn't be able to handle ticks and poop if it wasn't for him, or I would have to stop being such a princess and pick fleas and ticks off or poop up myself lol. Thank heavens for little boys!:D
But I know what i did do was just stay on the sidewalk and pick him up and walk over large patches of grass. One thing about Yorkies is that they don't need to run a marathon to stay in shape, a walking a few blocks does wonders for them.
