Weaning...Question:Maddie is now 3 weeks 4 days old. Momma Emma is still with her but I have a question. When should I start to wean her? She's started on Puppy weaning food (which I mix with cottage cheese). She'll eat a little bit but then goes straight to Mom. Should I wait til Mom decides to do the wean? Momma's in and out of the box quite a bit now and Maddie follows her lol. Answer: Have you tried canned food? I'd try that, canned puppy food, they seem to really enjoy it. Many will go straight to kibble but I've heard with single pup litters the canned works best. Just give her time without Momma there to substitute with mommy formula :) If she has 20min alone with the food and no alternative she may eat more of it. Answer: I start my pups on canned puppy food when they are between 3-4 weeks. Then the mother will gradually start weaning the puppies off her milk. Just let the puppy eat as much food as they want. now if they are not completely weaned by 8 weeks then I seperate them from mom Answer: Thanks guys. I did go the canned food route and it's worked beautifully! IF she tries to nurse off Momma, Emma simply steps over her. Maddie is now 4 weeks 3 days and is much more interested in playing with Mom and Dad (both are absolutely wonderful with her) than nursing. She's taken well to her food and is drinking water on her own. EG |
