What would you do if you rescued...Question:a dog from the shelter and 2 weeks later found the dog to be pregnant? I see dogs get surrendered all the time pregnant or with litters and I am just wondering what you would do? Here is a scenario. You adopt a dog from a shelter with a spay clause saying you have 30 days to spay and show proof of spay or the shelter surrenders the dog back. Well a week later at a vet visit, you come to find out the dog is pregnant. Let's say halfway through term(so what is that about a ,month?). You did not plan on adopting a pregnant dog, but you come to find out that you did. What would you do? Would you abort the litter since there is no known history of the dog or what it is bred with? Knowing there are plenty of dogs already in shelters? Or would you go ahead with litter and take on the responsibility of all the pups born? ETA: I do not want this to be a debate as there is no right or wrong answer, but a curiosity of what you may find yourself doing if ever in this situation.**Not sure if this is in the right section** Just another question to make y'all think :) Answer: I personally would call the shelter let them know what was going on and let her have the pups. First she has obviously been through enough already and doesn't really need any more turmoil in her life, but then again if I let her continue with the pregnancy and she lost them or they all died then I would feel guilty.. Now I'm not sure what I would do.. Let me think on it. Good post. Answer: With my current experience level, if the dog seemed healthy I would go ahead with the litter. If the dog seemed not able to handle I would probably abort. In my early dog days, I dont know what I would have done. I dont think I would have returned the dog, I would have figured it out and made it work. Answer: I would inform the shelter of the vet's findings, allow the dog to have the litter and take responsibility for the pups. I would ideally like to have the shelter list the pups as adoptable when they reach the appropiate age, and the potential adopters would have to be approved by the shelter and the adoption fee paid to them and they would have to follow the terms agreed upon via contract with the shelter. Answer: I would take the dog to the vet, and as long as the vet says everything is ok I would let the dog have the litter. I would find good homes for the pups as well through the shelter or myself. Answer: I would have the dog spayed. It's easier for me to get rid of an unborn litter then for a shelter to have to euthanise it 8 months later. (or if not that puppy one that could have taken it's place.) Answer: Our shelter will not let you take the dog home unless it is spayed. Answer: the biggest problem is not knowing what it has mated with so you could end up with anything, even some serious health problems so it would be unfair to let another litter be born however im not sure i could bring myself to abort what could be a perfectly healthy litter of pups so you have me on that one and i have no idea what i would really do. Answer: I would have animal assessed by Vet. There are a lot of factors that would influence if I would allow the pups to term. Most likely, I would have the litter aborted thru a spay. |
