Heritage: Siberian HuskyQuestion:The Siberian Husky (Ive done some research on the breed and found some very interesting information, Ive worked hard to keep it light and fun, because you know how boring this stuff can get, but if you read all of it im sure you wont be dissapointed :)) Hi. Im Sid the Sibe. I just wanted to tell you about the Siberian Husky Heritage. The Sibe is a purebred dog and has been for centuries, its not a wild, half-wolf, cross-bred creature. The breed was developed by the Chukchi people of N.E. Asia. In 1909 we were first brought to Alaska and competed in long-distance sled dog races. Alaskan Dog Drivers quickly saw the ability in the husky of Siberia. Spotlight: In the winter of 1925 in Nome, Alaska the diphtheria epidemic broke out. A relay of dog teams brought life-saving serum from distant Neana. The heroic endeavor earned national prominence for the drivers and thier dogs. Leonhard Seppala who competed in the relay brought his team of Siberian Huskies, imports from Siberia to the United States on tour. While in New England he competed in Sled Dog Races and again proved the Superiority of Siberian Huskies over the Native Dogs. In 1930 the breed earned AKC recognition. How we are: The Siberian Husky has a delightful temperament, affectionate but not fawning. This gentle and friendly dispostion may be a heritage from the past since the Chukchi people held thier dogs in great esteem, housed them in thier family shelters and encouraged thier children to play with them. Today it is charming to observe the special appeal that Siberian Huskies and children have for eachother. The Siberian Husky is alert, eager to please and adaptable. Sibes Intelligence has been proven but his independent spirit may at times be a challenge. Sibes versatility makes them an agreeable companinion to people. Sibes exhibit no fear or suspicion of strangers. This is not the temperament of a watchdog, although a Siberian Husky may unwittingly act as a deterrent to those ignorant of his true hospitable nature. In his relations with strange dogs, the Siberian Husky displays friendly interest and gentlemanly decorum. If attacked, however, he is ready and able to defend himself, and can handle the aggressor with dispatch and ease. We are also ideal hunters with Predatory instincts that are strong. We are swift, cunning, and patient in hunting skills. We are very easy to care for. We are by nature very clean and free from body odor and parasites. We shed once a year but some people feel that this peridic problem is easier to cope with than the constant shedding and renewal of many smooth-coated breeds. Chewing and digging? Uhm we are known to do our share. We are said to be an "easy keeper," requiring only a small amount of food for our size. This trait, too, may be traced to the origins of our breed, as the Chukchis developed their dogs to pull a light load at a fast pace over great distances in low temperatures on the smallest possible intake of food. Our final characterist is our desire to RUN. There are many breeds of dogs which, when let out in the morning, will sit in the front yard all day. Not us. Our heritage has endowed us with the desire to run and our conformation has given us the ability to enjoy it effortlessly. PLEASE NOTE!: In addition to the Siberian Husky, there are two other Arctic breeds, the Alaskan Malamute and the Samoyed, recognized by the AKC. These three recognized breeds are to be distinguished from the various cross-breds known collectively as Alaskan huskies. The term "husky" is a corruption of the nickname "Esky" once applied to the Eskimos and subsequently to their dogs. The Siberian Husky is the only recognized breed in which this word has become part of the proper name. Warning: In recent years, the registration figures for the Siberian Husky have risen sharply. The SHCA is deeply concerned about this rapid increase in breed popularity, and does not wish to see the demand for Siberian Huskies result in a sacrifice of the breed's high quality. The Siberian Husky Club of America, Inc., whose membership consists of breeders, sled dog racing enthusiasts, exhibitors, and fanciers, has never lost sight of its primary objective. It remains dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the Siberian Husky as a sound, capable, and natural breed, whose characteristics of mind and body make him not only a beautiful dog and a willing worker, but also a devoted and delightful companion. Answer: i learned somthing new again today! lol shes so gorgeous! your right she kind of does look like shes angry with the black around her eyes! Answer: GS, that's great new info, except for the breed's new popularity! :( Ppl better not breed incorrectly with these beautiful dogs while I'm still alive! Answer: Yep its a shame. They dont want to much popularity for this breed. Thanks all :) Answer: wow GS that's really good. i didn't know some of that stuff but now thanks to u i do. thanks a lot GS. Answer: That's fnny to find all that information because I just started college and had to think of a topic for my first speech. I had finished introducing myself to the class and someone asked what my dog's anme was and I told the class her name was Kiev. I needed to find a topic and all I could think of was Siberian Husky because that's the rbeed I own and I ended up doing a speech on the Chukotka territory because the Chukchi people made the basic temperments and whatnot to a sibe. They treated their dogs with the highest respect and these people very well could have died if these dogs had never came into their lives. When they could no longer hunt mammoth the appearance of reigndeer and strange dogs came into their lands. The dogs were sued for both carrying things and herding the deer. Very family oriented dog, veyr packish. A good dog to the Chukchi people was not a guard dog but one that could get along with new people and new dogs since everyone had to work as a team! =) Answer: Interesting NightRise, lol thats so cool with your speech and all! Answer: SID I keep meaning to show him to you..This is my 6-month old siberian husky.. his name is Loki :) April stellarmoonsurf Answer: Great history lesson! It is always nice to learn something new about our babies! |
